History of Montrose, Minnesota
Montrose was founded in 1861 by pioneer George M. Wright, who named the settlement after a town in his home state of Pennsylvania. Early pioneers first knew the area as the “Virginia settlement.” A post office was established in 1866, with Wright serving as the first postmaster.
The arrival of the railroad was the primary catalyst for the village’s growth. A railroad station was constructed in 1878 — the same year the town was platted — and its location was tied to a steam sawmill built in 1872. The rail link transformed Montrose into a shipping hub for grain, lumber, and ties along U.S. Highway 12 and Minnesota Highway 25. The village was officially incorporated in 1881.
Electricity arrived in 1918, and the “good roads amendment” of 1920 solidified the town’s highway connections. In the 1930s, a series of fires destroyed most of the buildings on Railroad Street, prompting the business district to shift and align with U.S. Highway 12, where it remains a recognizable small-town commercial strip today.
