History of Annandale, Minnesota
Long before incorporation, the Annandale area was home to Indigenous Dakota and Ojibwe communities, and ancient burial mounds point to even earlier inhabitants. Minnesota achieved statehood in 1858, and during the U.S.–Dakota War period of 1862 settlers built Fort Harriman — also known as “Fort Skedaddle” — near Pleasant Lake for protection.
A log school was built in the community in 1869. In 1886 James Pratt platted the town, and the arrival of railroad service quickly established Annandale as the area’s commercial center. The village incorporated in 1888 with 187 residents and held its first Fourth of July celebration in 1889.
Annandale’s enduring “Heart of the Lakes” identity comes from the 27 lakes located within a ten-mile radius of the city — a legacy that still defines its lake-country recreation and tourism today.
